Denis and Mayra Velez have been married for over twenty five years but who’s counting, they said it wouldn’t last and it did. This marriage, both their second, has produced an interesting offspring, paintings and lots of them. Denis of Puerto Rican decent is a retired commercial photographer and his wife Mayra a proud daughter of the Dominican Republic is a professional make up artist. They both have one thing in common, painting. Denis loves to use his New York City’s Art and Design training to paint still life and landscape in his preferred acrylic medium and Mayra loves to use her pastels, oil pastels, watercolors as well gouache to express her talent by painting just about anything.
Although their styles of painting differ like Picasso and Norman Rockwell, Mayra admires the style of the American artist Mary Cassatt who delicately depicted her women and children with pastels and of course the famous French impressionist Edgar Degas who Ms. Cassatt studied under in Paris during the late 1800s. Denis on the other hand admires Vincent Van Gogh, the hidden patterns and colorful innuendos the master skillfully played with articulated passions that Denis attempts to capture in his own works.
Is there a simmering competition with two painters under one roof? There sure is. Denis and Mayra are both very competitive and have very meticulous tastes. At times it is not so easy keeping criticism tightly lipped, especially when there are works in progress, which is always the case.
