My wife, Mayra and I attended an art show opening one Saturday evening. There were many of our fellow artist friends that attended the show and we ended up making new friends. I stepped outside onto the terrace in order to get something to drink. It was a pleasant evening and I leaned against the guard rail because I started to eves drop on a conversation that two art promoters were having. They were arguing on how to sell art to the public by selling Giclée (French for to spray) type of prints or high quality digital reproductions.
I thought of interjecting my opinion into the conversation that was getting a little heated with each swallow of win, I thought it best not to involve my two cents, but it made me think. The North American appreciation for art is virtually nonexistent. It does exist in large cities such as New York City, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco. Of course there are others which I just do not know enough about to mention, that is my fault and my own cultural limitation. Europe, South America and the Orient are also other places where the general public will not only recognize a Van Gough painting but will know a bit about his struggles as an artist.
I truly think that you can take an original Van Gough and display it in any one of those supper box type mart stores with a mark down sign reading our low price of $49.95 and people would not be impressed by the sale or even recognize the painting. It is not that the North American culture is not smart it is that they are not taught art history or art appreciation in schools.
In our limited experiences in the art market as artists, Mayra and I have noticed the difference between the North American art buyer and the foreign buyer. In our experience we found that Europeans and South Americans not only appreciate our art but are familiar with how we paint and they know the difference between an original and a Giclée or a high quality laser print. In South America
you can walk into a modest home and they will have original paintings of local artists hanging in their homes. In this market you will find a marked down cardboard print mounted on cheap cardboard with a tacky plastic frame mounted on the wall with double sided tape.
