My wife Mayra and I were in Amsterdam this fall, I stayed there for a month and my experience there has redefined my artistic outlook. A visitor to Amsterdam would be familiar with masters such as Rembrandt and Van Gough but M.C. Escher, Piet Mondrian and Willem de Kooning are others that have inspired me as an artist as well. The city of Amsterdam is full of life and it is overflowing with young, healthy and good looking people who are busily rushing through their city to and from work or play. We visited the museums but the city itself is a museum the buildings in the center of the city are four to five hundred years old. Amsterdam is a very young oriented and active city. Bicycles are its chief mode of transportation. Everyone owns and uses the bicycle for business and leisure. You can see whole families riding down busy streets going to work or school on their bikes. If you decide to go to Amsterdam and you are not in shape please practice your bike riding for a month before you go. It is a lot of fun but be careful.
They say that Amsterdam is a very liberal city because it allows marijuana smoking and prostitution in designated areas. What I found was that the city’s attitude is, that we are all adults and it is each person’s responsibility to control his or her lifestyle within the law. Because of this attitude there is no abuse of these vices and in turn there is a low crime rate because by keeping these things underground inevitably increases illegal profits because of its sheer illegality.
Go to Amsterdam and enjoy, be adventurous and drink in the history and sights. Make sure to bring a lot of money because it is not a low budget city but if you plan ahead you can have a great time.
